C’était en 1973. Le 7 avril, au Théâtre municipal du Grand Duché de Luxembourg. La variété clinquait plein feu jusque sur le petit écran. Cols pelle-à-tarte, pattes d’eph’, permanentes laquées, lycras strassés et drapeaux colorés : le concours Eurovision de la chanson unissait des millions de téléspectateurs de par l’Europe pour voir défiler les candidats de dix-sept pays aux rythmes enjoués de mélopées déchirantes pleurant des amours désespérées. Commenté en direct sur les ondes françaises par Pierre Tchernia, qui, entre deux bouquets de fleurs bleues et une salve d’applaudissements, taille des costumes en série d’un trait badin, ce rendez-vous télévisuel inauguré en 1956 s’est inscrit dans la mémoire collective. Ni une ni deux, il n’en fallait pas plus pour que Massimo Furlan, expert en détournement de souvenirs, s’empare de ce tour de chant aujourd’hui kitschissime et se glisse dans les mots et gestes de ces chanteurs en verve. Emperruqués et habillés sur le modèle, le performer suisse et sa complice Anne Delahaye les imitent avec une maniaque précision, non pour les parodier mais pour les reproduire à l’identique. Le burlesque de cette tentative de reconstitution n’en claque que plus fort, soutenu par l’inévitable ratage malgré leurs efforts enthousiastes : ils chantent décidément faux… mais copient juste.
Digressions philosophiques
Cette reprise, ou, selon le lexique anglo-saxon ce re-enactement en vogue dans les arts plastiques, ne fait qu’augmenter la distance qui nous sépare de cette époque. C’est précisément cet écart entre l’original et la copie qui devient l’enjeu de 1973. Au-delà du comique désopilant, la démarche ouvre de passionnants questionnements, activés avec drôlerie par un petit aréopage de penseurs. Ainsi Cliff Richard, aristotélicien s’interrogeant sur la variété… de la variété usinée désormais selon les standards de l’industrie culturelle. Tandis que le show télévisé se poursuit en sourdine, le plateau marque une pause : l’anthropologue Marc Augé, le philosophe Serge Margel, le philosophe et musicologue Bastien Gallet tombent les masques et conversent sur la culture de masse et ses spécificités, sur la contingence du regard, qui, selon l’époque, voit tantôt ringardise tantôt idéal, ou encore sur l’exploitation capitaliste de la culture populaire, à l’œuvre dans la mode vintage notamment. Le tout animé par Massimo Furlan, alias Pino Tozzi, pizzaiolo chanteur amateur qui fait la tournée des mariages. Alliant l’humour et la réflexion, 1973 offre, à partir d’une trace documentaire confrontée au présent, matière à observer l’humain, le groupe, soi-même, à sonder notre regard, notre rapport au rituel collectif, au kitsch… à nos idoles d’hier.
