Ayant contracté trois mariages et trois divorces, Strindberg a fait l’expérience du conflit conjugal et des séparations. Accusé de misogynie dans le temps même où le dramaturge accomplit une œuvre moderne à la charnière des années 1900, ce mari malheureux analyse les entrelacs de la relation amoureuse. À l’époque, lorsqu’un couple décide de divorcer, le juge donne un « premier avertissement », une conciliation de la durée d’un an permettant de décider de la rupture ou non. Axel, dans 1er Avertissement de Strindberg, pourrait être le personnage autobiographique, un homme malmené moralement par son épouse à la fois distante et amoureuse. Malheur au mari qui aime sa femme, sur un chemin semé d’épines : « Je n’ai souhaité qu’une chose, te détester pour que tu m’aimes », dit Axel (Erik Chantry-Herkenrath) à Olga (Séverine Bozkurt). Mais l’épouse ironise et s’applique à faire mal tandis qu’elle souffre pareillement, victime d’une jalousie incontrôlable. Certes, le mari est courtisé par Rose (Eliza Calmat), collégienne innocente, et par la Baronne (Martine Delor), veuve d’un âge mûr et jalouse « perpétuelle ». Les trois parques déploient avec art la gamme féminine et orageuse de tous les liens affectifs possibles en privilégiant plutôt l’échec et la souffrance, destin malheureux oblige.
La pièce de chambre de Strindberg propose au public la posture du voyeur.
La jalousie est un supplice, un sentiment amer provoqué chez celui qui l’éprouve par les exigences d’un amour inquiet, le désir de possession de la personne aimée, la crainte, le soupçon ou la certitude de son infidélité. Barthes précise que la jalousie est « une équation à trois termes permutables (indécidables) : on est toujours jaloux de deux personnes à la fois : je suis jaloux de qui j’aime et de qui l’aime ». Écrite entre 1892 et 1893, la pièce de chambre de Strindbergpropose au public la posture du voyeur malgré lui : il entre « par le trou de la serrure » dans l’intimité des quatre personnages. Embrassements, baisers, soupirs de tendresse charnelle, le spectateur épouse l’œil de la caméra de cinéma au plus près du quatuor et des émotions. Mais la solution intime de l’objet aimé n’est jamais divulguée car les araignées, naturellement patientes et dissimulatrices, sont un symbole de ruse et de traîtrise. Jamais l’amoureux éconduit ne devine ce que recèle l’âme cachée de son amante. Comme Bashung, sur les paroles de Madame rêve, on se sent loin des amours devinettes. Le spectateur est placé dans la tourmente instable des va-et-vient de la passion dévastatrice. Cette grande proximité permet de saisir les atermoiements du cœur et le sérieux de l’avertissement.
