1869. Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle. L’éminent professeur Aronnax, revenu de son incroyable odyssée sous-marine à bord du Nautilus, raconte et revit son extraordinaire aventure auprès du Capitaine Nemo (présent à travers un crâne de tigre), en compagnie du valet Conseil (représenté par un poisson diodon) et du harponneur Ned Land (sous les traits d’une huître opiniâtre). Un périple d’une étonnante théâtralité et d’une visionnaire perspective écologique, où Sydney Bernard met en scène et interprète seul l’épopée en assumant à fond la carte du spectaculaire. Le voyage fantastique tonne aussi comme un réquisitoire contre l’emprise irréfléchie de l’homme sur la nature, pillant ses richesses sans même réaliser qu’il signe ainsi sa propre destruction.
Machinerie surprenante
Le monologue respecte la chronologie du voyage et le bureau du professeur magique connaît toutes sortes de métamorphoses : sous-marin, salle des machines, banquise, maelström tourbillonnant… La lutte contre le requin ou le poulpe géant implique fortement le public, et afin de restituer au mieux le merveilleux de la prose, sans oublier une bonne dose d’humour. Effets visuels, décor sonore de Loïc Le Cadre, musique symphonique de John Scott composée pour le documentaire Expédition Jules Verne : à bord du trois-mâts Belem, ainsi que divers objets – planisphère, grandes orgues, bulles, tentacules, hublot et scaphandre… – permettent de créer une machinerie surprenante et délirante, qui ravit petits et grands. Un huis clos où « prisonniers parce que rêvant de liberté, les deux héros s’émerveillent, jouent et s’enferment dans les paradoxes d’une aventure sans fin. » Une adaptation qui vous immerge dans les profondeurs de la mer…
