Maro se caractérise dans le travail par un esprit rabelaisien fait de transgression, de parodie, d’érotisme, de mélange de sublime et de trivial. Une réappropriation du butô dont les sources vont de la danse expressionniste allemande, du surréalisme, de Sade et de Genet aux mythes archaïques japonais, aux rites shintô, à la nature. Maro a confié à un de ses danseurs, Kumotarô Mukai, membre du collectif depuis 94, la chorégraphie de 2001 : l’odyssée dans une jarre. Dans cette cérémonie fantasque et débridée, treize danseurs évoluent sur des airs d’opéra et de la pop japonaise. Si Dairakudakan se libère de certains codes du butô, il garde celui des corps nus blanchis permettant au danseur d’être une sculpture en mouvement. Selon Akaji Maro, « les corps peints en blanc sont des sculptures mobiles. Représenter l’infirmité physique et la folie font partie de l’esthétique du butô. Le point de vue d’un animal, d’un insecte, d’un foetus ou d’un nain est important lui aussi. Notre but est de changer la perspective du public – quitte à le choquer. » Un programme de singularité intense à découvrir.
