On sait peu que la célèbre nouvelle de Stefan Zweig, Vingt-quatre heures de la vie d’une femme, eut pour modèle un livre de Constance de Salm. Cette poétesse et dramaturge, née en 1767 et morte en 1845, a écrit un seul roman : Vingt-quatre heures de la vie d’une femme sensible, où elle décrit en 46 lettres la passion d’une femme dévorée par la jalousie et la peur de perdre son amant. Publié de façon anonyme en 1824, le texte est tombé dans l’oubli à l’instar de son autrice qui ambitionnait pourtant de « montrer jusqu’à quel point [les sensations] peuvent égarer [les femmes], et leur donner par là une utile et grande leçon ». La metteuse en scène Eva Byele semble l’avoir entendue. Reprenant la structure du roman, elle modifie et transpose l’histoire dans les années 20 pour ajouter à la passion amoureuse la thématique de l’émancipation : « dès l’écriture de ce texte, j’ai eu la volonté de l’adapter en un seule en scène afin de donner corps et vie à cette héroïne d’une grande modernité. Il m’a paru essentiel qu’une certaine modernité alors transparaisse aussi bien dans la musique, les lumières ou le costume. Ainsi, passé et présent se mêlent pour mieux révéler l’intemporalité des propos de cette femme qui lutte, par l’écriture, pour découvrir qui elle est. »
