Fête du théâtre, baromètre de la créativité artistique, creuset international et révélateur de l’état du monde à travers le regard esthétique et critique des artistes, le Festival d’Avignon est tout cela à la fois, sans oublier une atmosphère chaleureuse propice à de multiples échanges avec le public, qu’ils soient organisés comme à l’Ecole d’art ou impromptus. L’an dernier plusieurs spectacles ont marqué les esprits, et on ne résiste pas au plaisir de se remémorer la deuxième partie d’Atropa de Guy Cassiers, d’une splendide limpidité, les Tragédies Romaines si vivantes d’Ivo van Hove ou Inferno de Romeo Castellucci d’une impressionnante qualité imaginaire. Cette année, une vingtaine de créations sur environ trente spectacles invite à un périple autour du monde qui interroge la violence d’un point de vue intime, sociétal ou politique, revisite la tragédie grecque ou explore des histoires actuelles. Ces récits proviennent de divers continents et diverses langues, pour mettre en scène des interrogations plus que des certitudes. Savoir mettre en mots sa mémoire, savoir regarder en face ou du moins approcher ses traumatismes, individuels ou historiques, savoir imaginer un futur en connaissant le passé, autant de spécificités et d’aptitudes humaines qui peuvent prendre corps sur un plateau de théâtre de façon percutante, grâce à une intelligence artistique à la fois sensible et spirituelle. Cette année la programmation a été nourrie du compagnonnage avec un artiste à l’identité nomade, qui connaît en profondeur pour les avoir vécus la guerre et ses ravages et qui ne cesse de s’interroger sur les égarements de l’humanité au fil de mots plus fantastiques que réalistes, de mots gorgés d’imaginaire mais affûtés et frappants.
Temps de grands troubles et révoltes cinglantes
Wajdi Mouawad a grandi à Beyrouth avant de s’exiler en France puis au Québec, et il présente dans la cour d’honneur en intégrale Littoral, Incendies et Forêts du 8 au 12 juillet (ne pas oublier de prévoir de se couvrir, les nuits peuvent être froides), et à Châteaublanc Ciels, contrepoint et conclusion du quatuor. Au programme aussi l’israélien Amos Gitaï qui s’empare de La guerre des Juifs de Flavius Josèphe, résistant contre l’occupant romain qui ensuite a rejoint Rome ; le polonais Krzysztof Warlikowski qui enquête sur l’horreur en évoquant les crimes antiques relatés par Euripide ou Eschyle, ou la noirceur de la Shoah à travers Les Bienveillantes de Jonathan Littell ; Johan Simons et Paul Koek qui content la fable sociale tristement désenchantée Casimir et Caroline de Ödön von Horváth ; Claude Régy qui investit Ode Maritime de Pessoa avec Jean-Quentin Chatelain ; Denis Marleau qui porte à la scène Une fête pour Boris de Thomas Bernhard, banquet grimaçant de culs-de-jatte ; l’argentin Federico Leon qui propose une expérience du temps à travers des personnages à divers âges de la vie ; Christoph Marthaler qui donne vie à une création polyphonique fondée sur une chanson populaire et un lied de Schubert ; Joël Jouanneau qui interroge la saga des Labdacides ; Thierry Bedard qui met en scène en ces temps de grands troubles sur l’île la révolte cinglante de l’auteur malgache Jean-Luc Raharimanana, et de nombreuses autres propositions. Et n’oublions pas le Off, grâce auquel la ville entière, au-delà de tout cadre institutionnel, vibre d’un dynamisme engagé et foisonne de propositions à la créativité artistique généreuse, de qualité inégale, pour certaines d’excellents spectacles à découvrir d’urgence. Comme l’an dernier, La Terrasse propose un hors-série sur Avignon, qui interroge cette année les relations entre l’état et la culture, et couvre l’actualité du festival d’Avignon et du off. Une sélection qualitative permet ainsi de mettre en lumière, outre le prestigieux programme du Festival, de multiples spectacles du Off, que nous avons vus lorsque c’était possible.
