Issu du courant de la musique répétitive, John Adams (né en 1947) a construit depuis le milieu des années quatre-vingt une œuvre lyrique originale dont le propos puise le plus souvent au cœur de l’imaginaire américain. Ainsi le Théâtre du Châtelet a-t-il présenté récemment Nixon in China ou I was looking at the ceiling and then I saw the sky. Avec A Flowering Tree, adapté d’un conte indien, John Adams quitte son territoire habituel mais ni sa manière musicale, ni une certaine tradition occidentale puisque l’ouvrage, créé en 2006 pour l’année Mozart, est un clin d’œil appuyé à La Flûte enchantée : ici aussi, il s’agit de montrer, à travers une série d’épreuves, la transfiguration par l’amour et, selon les mots du compositeur, « l’émergence d’une conscience morale ». Pour l’exotisme, il faudra compter – outre quelques vocalises orientalisantes – sur la mise en scène (avec danse et marionnettes) de Vishal Bhardwaj, figure montante du cinéma indien, également compositeur.
