Quelques motifs mélodiques, quelques traits d’orchestration — il ne faut pas bien longtemps pour reconnaître la touche du compositeur de West Side Story (1957) dans A Quiet Place (1983). Mais c’est ici un Bernstein étonnant, épuré quoique plein de verve (quelques années avant sa mort, il gardait un goût malicieux pour le pastiche et pour les effets saisissants). Moins centré sur les rythmes de danse et davantage sur l’atmosphère orchestrale, le compositeur dessine, dans cette évocation des failles d’une famille américaine en deuil, des personnages complexes et vivants dont pourront s’emparer Krzysztof Warlikowski et les chanteurs (dont Patricia Petibon, très attendue dans le rôle de Dede). Plusieurs fois remanié, l’ouvrage est donné ici dans une version condensée (dans son orchestration comme dans son livret) que Kent Nagano, proche du compositeur dans les années 1980, avait créée en 2013 à Berlin puis enregistrée en 2017.
