En dépit du procès qui le blanchit, d’aucuns reprochèrent au musicien Wilhelm Furtwängler d’être resté en Allemagne et d’y avoir dirigé des concerts en présence d’Hitler. Si c’est auprès des partitions de Beethoven et de Brahms et de l’orchestre philarmonique de Berlin qu’il resta, bien davantage qu’aux côtés des thuriféraires de la mort, on ne pardonna jamais complètement à l’immense chef d’orchestre d’avoir préféré à l’exil « l’émigration intérieure » que lui reprochait Goebbels. Ronald Harwood – dramaturge et scénariste du film Le Pianiste – s’est inspiré de la vie de Furtwängler pour cette pièce qui interroge la délicate question des limites de la compromission.
Est-on responsable de ce qu’on a fait ou de ce qu’on n’a pas fait ?
En 1946, à Berlin, le commandant américain Steve Arnold (interprété par Francis Lombrail) interroge sans relâche le musicien pour mettre au grand jour sa culpabilité. Le face-à-face entre les deux hommes est poignant et féroce. Pourquoi Furtwängler n’est-il pas parti ? Pourquoi n’a-t-il pas abandonné son orchestre et ses musiciens ? Qui a raison et qui a tort ? Michel Bouquet, au sommet de son art, interprète l’artiste controversé, sommé de rendre des comptes sur ce qu’il n’a pas fait, alors que sa vie entière, son mépris pour le nazisme et son soutien aux musiciens juifs témoignent pour lui.
