En 2021, il était censé être le fil conducteur de la trentième édition de Sons d’hiver, mise à mal par le Covid. Le batteur percussionniste Hamid Drake peut enfin présenter son Tribute to Alice Coltrane, « grande médium qui a permis de placer la musique à un niveau plus cosmique », qu’il rencontra à Chicago alors qu’il avait seize ans. « Sa créativité se diffusait sur les musiciens qui l’entouraient, et sur moi l’impact a été puissant. Elle m’a légué une ouverture spirituelle et esthétique, et ce concert est ma manière d’honorer une personnalité qui a permis à l’adolescent que j’étais de devenir un adulte. » À l’écouter depuis tant d’années, on peut mesurer la portée de tels propos chez celui qui eut pour autre maître de musique Don Cherry. Comme ce dernier, il n’a cessé d’ouvrir des horizons comme il intègre tout type de tambours et rythmes à sa batterie. Irréductible à une catégorie, Hamid Drake est avant tout un citoyen du monde qui entend jouer une musique « universaliste ». Pour preuves le casting qui l’accompagne dans cet hommage : un vibraphoniste italien, un saxophoniste français, un électronicien norvégien, des Américains et ainsi de suite…
