Ils sont cinq sur scène, cinq personnages — interprétés par Eric Caruso, Alain Fromager, Thomas Gonzales, Florence Janas et Stanislas Stanic — sortis de l’esprit d’Alexandre Dal Farra. Car loin d’un théâtre documentaire, l’auteur brésilien signe ici, comme le précise le metteur en scène Guillaume Durieux, un « véritable poème dramatique où l’écoute du spectateur et son imagination sont indispensables à la composition de l’œuvre ». Mensonges, corruptions, drogues, sexe, machisme, complots, intimidations, soumissions… Entre tragique et comique, Abnégation nous plonge « dans les backrooms d’un parti politique où espoir, idée, utopie ne sont plus que vestiges, où l’exercice du pouvoir détruit les hommes qui s’y emploient, où l’on ne se sert plus de l’Idéal ou de l’Absolu que pour justifier les plus basses besognes ».
