La musique russe est riche d’une tradition chorale d’essence religieuse, qui s’exprime notamment dans les chœurs d’hommes qui se sont consacrés depuis des siècles au service de la liturgie orthodoxe. C’est cette tradition que Tchaïkovski fait sienne dans sa relecture de la Liturgie de Saint-Jean Chrysostome pour chœur mixte a capella. Laurence Equilbey a eu l’intelligence de prolonger ce programme vers le xxe siècle avec cinq des Douze chœurs sur des poèmes de Polonski (1909) de Sergueï Taneïev et jusqu’à Chostakovitch (qui dans sa Symphonie « Babi Yar » lance un clin d’œil ironique à la tradition chorale orthodoxe). Quel contraste entre les Dix poèmes sur des textes révolutionnaires (1951), hommage puissamment réaliste aux révolutionnaires de 1905, l’apaisement religieux de Tchaïkovski et le classicisme de Taneïev !
