Il faut imaginer l’émerveillement des premiers spectateurs devant les surprises de l’opéra baroque – et pour cela l’Opéra royal est un lieu idéal (même si son édification est postérieure aux grandes heures des deux compositeurs ici rassemblés). Les « machines » du théâtre baroque ont ouvert la porte à tous les trésors de l’illusion – avec pour corollaire des livrets parfois franchement alambiqués. De fait, les Métamorphoses d’Ovide ont nourri nombre d’ouvrages lyriques où la transformation des décors et des personnages eux-mêmes constitue autant une prouesse scénique qu’une incitation à l’invention musicale. Dans Actéon, Charpentier narre l’histoire de ce chasseur malchanceux ou indélicat changé en cerf pour avoir aperçu Diane au bain. Rameau, quant à lui, a fait un opéra-ballet de celle de Pygmalion, sculpteur tombant amoureux de son œuvre de pierre devenue femme. Bien dans l’esprit baroque, chant, musique et danse se mêlent dans cette double production signée par le metteur en scène Marshall Pynkoski et la chorégraphe Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, co-fondateurs d’Opera Atelier il y a plus de trente ans. Le ténor Colin Ainsworth tient les rôles-titres des deux héros.
