« J’avais vingt ans. Je ne laisserai personne dire que c’est le plus bel âge de la vie. » Une phrase qui « résonne comme l’expression d’une inquiétude commune à toutes celles et ceux qui viennent au monde et veulent y trouver leur juste place » dit Didier Bezace. Cette phrase introduit le pamphlet de jeunesse de Paul Nizan (1905-1940), publié en 1931, environ cinq ans après son séjour en tant que précepteur à Aden en Arabie britannique, l’un des symboles du colonialisme que le jeune homme réprouve. Une œuvre de jeunesse donc, où le refus de la société bourgeoise et de l’ordre établi s’affirme de façon radicale et sincère. Réédité en 1960, préfacé alors par Jean-Paul Sartre, son ami dès la sixième à Henri IV et plus encore à Normale Sup – où paraît-il leurs professeurs les confondaient parfois – Aden Arabie est un cri de colère. « Il connaissait la terreur et la hargne plutôt que les douceurs du désespoir », dit Sartre. Un an après Aden Arabie, Les Chiens de garde fustige les philosophes universitaires, alliés des possédants, contribuant au maintien du peuple dans « les chemins de la complaisance et du respect » selon les mots de Bertrand Poirot-Delpech.
Une révolte hautement politisée
Paul Nizan est de ceux dont la révolte, hautement politisée, plus enragée qu’engagée, ne se réduit pas à l’élan des mots, mais trouve un aboutissement concret dans un militantisme très actif au sein du Parti Communiste, jusqu’à sa démission en 1939 suite au pacte germano-soviétique. Preuve qu’un militantisme fervent ne rend pas forcément aveugle. Fauché par une balle allemande à 35 ans, Paul Nizan, évoquant une figure rimbaldienne plus politique que poétique, interroge fortement l’identité de la jeunesse et les rapports que celle-ci entretient avec ses aînés. Comment trouver sa place dans le monde ? Comment corriger les injustices, les idées reçues et les folies humaines ? Comment mettre en forme sa révolte et transcender l’angoisse d’exister ? Le monde d’aujourd’hui, si loin de toute utopie, n’est finalement pas plus éloigné du chaos que celui de l’entre-deux-guerres. Avec Daniel Delabesse et Thierry Gibault, Didier Bezace veut faire souffler sur la scène « le vent essentiel de l’intelligence, de l’ardeur et du combat ». A notre époque désenchantée, où la politique n’échappe pas à la médiocrité, c’est une belle idée.
