« Quand j’écoute Fela, j’entends James Brown. Nous étions des Africains avant la déportation. Notre musique, c’est aussi la leur. » Pour le saxophoniste Archie Shepp, héros du festival Panafricain en 1969, cela sonne comme une évidence. L’Afrique est la source du jazz. Cette union, fantasmée dans les premiers temps, deviendra par la suite bien réelle. Dès 1956, Louis Armstrong rencontre au Ghana le trompettiste ET Mensah, chef de file du highlife. Dans la foulée, Randy Weston fait lui aussi le grand voyage de retour, traversant nombre de pays. L’écriture du pianiste en rendra compte constamment. Tout comme Don Cherry, apôtre du « Free Jazz », nourrira très vite son imaginaire de ses périples en Afrique, adoptant même des instruments dont le doussoun’goni, la harpe des chasseurs maliens. A partir des ouvertures suscitées par les révolutions esthétiques des années 60, le mouvement s’intensifie : avec ses costumes et son instrumentarium, le Art Ensemble Of Chicago est emblématique de toute une génération de jazzmen pour qui l’Afrique est la matrice du jazz. Même Count Basie salue l’Afrique dans un album éponyme sur RCA, tandis que le saxophoniste Barney Willen signe « Moshi », qui témoigne des mois passés sur place. Il ne sera pas le seul Français, loin s’en faut, à s’intéresser de près à l’Afrique… Comme le prouvent encore les échappées belles du Tigre des Platanes en terre éthiopienne.
Chaque génération au diapason
A partir des années 90, aux Etats-Unis, une nouvelle génération va revenir aux pays des ancêtres. C’est le cas de deux saxophonistes : Steve Coleman s’intéresse tout particulièrement aux rythmiques yoruba, tandis que David Murray, dix ans après avoir dirigé une Fodeuk Revue avec la scène sénégalaise, monte en 2007 un opéra autour de la figure de Pouchkine, dont l’aïeul était camerounais. Tous cherchent là, entre les lignes, une identité passée à la trappe dans les bateaux négriers. Toujours est-il que la liste de tels échanges pourrait noircir des pages d’un bottin, d’autant que dans le même temps, des Africains se convertissent brillamment au jazz. Le Kora Jazz Trio adapte Parker aux variations mandingues, Cheikh-Tidiane Seck accueille Hank Jones puis Dee Dee Bridgewater dans les subtilités de la musique malienne, et le Béninois Lionel Loueke triomphe à New York, suivant la voie du Camerounais Richard Bona. Quant à Foday Musa Suso, après s’être associé à Herbie Hancock, il duettiste avec Jack DeJohnette dans un album, qui sonne comme l’introduction idoine à la rencontre du même batteur avec la diva du désert Dimi Mint Abba.
