Après avoir lu L’Homme sans qualités de Robert Musil, Marguerite Duras conçoit Agatha, petite pièce sur l’amour et l’inceste entre un frère et une sœur. L’enfance de la femme de lettres resurgit à cette occasion, marquée par une présence maternelle forte à côté de la jeune fille d’alors, située entre deux frères dont le plus jeune reçoit toute l’affection sororale. La consommation de l’interdit n’a jamais eu lieu, mais l’amour empêché est là, vivace, permanent, brûlant. Daniel Mesguich perçoit Agatha comme une tragédie grecque ou racinienne contemporaine : « Agatha est le nom d’un cri. Le cri patient d’une douleur interdite. Ce qui se dit entre eux ne se dit pas. À peine cela se laisse-t-il entendre. Pourtant, rien ici n’existe hors ce qui se dit. » L’extrême intimité durassienne va se donner à lire à travers Sarah et William Mesguich, sœur et frère de sang, enfants du metteur en scène. Une posture réfléchie dans l’adéquation délicate à une œuvre.
