« Loth et son Dieu est un véritable poème sur l’amour. Sur l’amour extatique, passionnel, libertin qui lie Loth et son épouse, Sverdlosk, depuis plus de trente ans. Mais, aussi, sur l’amour brûlant, pulsionnel, violent que l’ange Drogheda, envoyé sur terre par Dieu pour sommer Loth et sa femme de quitter Sodome, éprouve pour cette dernière. Tout cela prend place de nos jours, dans un café sordide qui est à l’image du mépris que Drogheda ressent pour les habitants de cette ville. Ce mépris s’accompagne d’une grande cruauté. Car, ne pouvant assouvir les sentiments enflammés qui l’habitent, l’ange se venge sur un serveur : le rendant successivement aveugle, sourd puis muet. Ainsi, autour de cet être mutilé, se construit une métaphore sur la souffrance de l’homme. Par le biais d’une langue sublime, d’une très grande poésie, cette pièce entremêle un nombre vertigineux de thèmes. Howard Barker parle de l’amour fou, des tourments de la condition humaine, mais il propose également une réflexion très profonde sur l’inaliénable, sur la force indépassable d’un homme qui s’élève contre la volonté de Dieu.
Transformer le rapport scène/salle
Car Loth est prêt à tout accepter – le désert, la servitude…- mais il ne veut en aucun cas renoncer à l’amour qui l’unit à sa femme. Howard Barker est l’un des grands auteurs de notre époque. Par certains aspects, il me fait penser à Paul Claudel. Mais un Paul Claudel qui s’affirmerait comme un religieux païen, qui conférerait à ses textes des côtés sataniques. Ma mise en scène de Loth et son Dieu a pour principale ambition de donner à entendre l’éclat mais aussi la dimension extrêmement concrète de ce texte foisonnant, de cette langue d’une richesse étonnante. J’ai donc conçu un spectacle épuré, un spectacle pour lequel j’ai totalement transformé le rapport scène/salle de L’Atalante, créant un espace longiligne au sein duquel les acteurs et les spectateurs se font radicalement face. Car, il me semblait important de déthéâtraliser la relation du public à la représentation. Ceci afin que chacun puisse se trouver au plus proche du jeu des comédiens et de la chorégraphie scénique élaborée par Claire Richard, au plus proche de la chair de ce texte d’une beauté extraordinaire. »
