C’est à 21 ans, en 1951, qu’il va fonder son premier trio, ce format classique qui deviendra sa marque de fabrique, sa formule magique. Il s’appelle encore Frederick Jones, un nom qu’il ne va plus tarder à changer par Ahmad Jamal, en conformité avec sa conversion à l’islam. Dès lors, il multiplie les enregistrements, se distinguant avec l’album « At the Pershing », dont la version de « Poinciana » fera référence pour les générations à venir. Lui continue de peaufiner son style, tout à la fois virtuose et véloce sur le clavier, mais aussi empreint d’une profonde spiritualité et d’une certaine sérénité. Celle qui a présidé à l’enregistrement de son nouvel album, « A Quiet Time », où son trio est augmenté de la présence du percussionniste Manolo Badrena.
