On pensait qu’il ne reviendrait plus sous les projecteurs, mais il faut croire qu’Ahmad Jamal, 88 ans, a toujours le feu sacré. Il faut dire qu’il a commencé dès son plus jeune âge, enfant prodige de Pittsburgh qui participa à sa première émission de radio à 7 ans ! Ses conceptions musicales ont eu une influence déterminante sur l’évolution du jazz, notamment par le biais de Miles Davis qui ne cachait pas combien son sens de la construction et du silence avait influencé son style. Depuis plusieurs années, Jamal développe, avec une maestria intacte et un sens de la dramaturgie expert, une manière de mettre en scène la musique, dirigeant depuis son clavier un quartet au service de ses architectures, qu’il édifie avec minutie et n’hésite pas à balayer d’un trait fulgurant pour mieux recommencer.
