Les tambours suspendent, l’instant d’un soupir, leur increvable martèlement qui, depuis trois jours, appelle le génie de la brousse à protéger les récoltes contre les sauterelles. Devant les gens de ce village du Niger, une vieille femme, enrobée dans une couverture, entonne une danse de possession… C’est à partir de cette séquence du documentaire tourné en 1971 par le cinéaste et ethnologue Jean Rouch que Vincent Dupont a créé Air, partition pour deux corps sonores dialoguant avec un quatuor de chanteurs. Non qu’il illustre le film : il en extrait plutôt la quête de la transe. Fignolant chacune de ses pièces avec une extrême précision, le chorégraphe aime en effet à troubler la perception et fait souvent du corps un catalyseur de l’espace et du son pour révéler l’état intérieur. « Air cherche peut-être à savoir où se joue pour nous, aujourd’hui, cette transe engendrée par le regard des autres, des nôtres, et de quel ordre pourrait être son message. » explique-t-il. Sur la poésie de Charles Pennequin, Vincent Dupont invente un rituel où l’interaction entre les gestes et les voix ouvre à une étrange aventure perceptive.
