Pour son deuxième opéra, après L’Autre Côté (inspiré par l’écrivain et dessinateur Alfred Kubin) en 2006, Bruno Mantovani a choisi d’évoquer la figure et la vie d’Anna Akhmatova, l’une des plus grandes poétesses du xxe siècle. Pour le compositeur, « la vie d’Anna Akhmatova permet d’évoquer de nombreux thèmes : le rapport à la guerre, à la création, le rapport d’une mère à son fils » et le sujet s’est rapidement imposé dès les premières discussions avec son librettiste Christophe Ghristi. Bruno Mantovani a depuis longtemps démontré sa capacité à captiver l’auditeur, notamment dans des œuvres de longue haleine comme le superbe Concerto pour deux altos (2009). Familier de sa musique, Pascal Rophé dirige cette création que met en scène Nicolas Joel, avec Janina Baechle dans le rôle-titre.
