Vous faites du théâtre depuis plus de quarante ans. Pourquoi avoir attendu toutes ces années pour aborder l’œuvre de Samuel Beckett ?
Alain Françon : En réalité, bien que cela ne figure pas dans ma biographie, j’ai déjà mis en scène Fin de partie lorsque j’avais vingt ans, dans les années 1960. C’était l’un de mes premiers spectacles, à Saint-Etienne. Je jouais Hamm, Clov était interprété par André Marcon, Nagg par Pierre Charras et Nell par Chantal Montellier. Samuel Beckett a été le premier auteur contemporain pour lequel j’ai ressenti un grand enthousiasme. J’étais un véritable fanatique de son écriture. Ensuite, je me suis tourné vers d’autres dramaturges, comme Edward Bond, Michel Vinaver, Anton Tchekhov ou Henrik Ibsen. Mais je n’ai jamais cessé de lire les textes de Beckett. C’est un immense écrivain.
Que retenez-vous de son écriture ?
A. Fr. : Cet aspect lapidaire associé à cet humour dévastateur. Cette façon de dire un maximum de choses avec un minimum de mots. Ce matériau d’une densité exceptionnelle. Cette manière « d’être dans les mots »… Pendant longtemps, j’ai plutôt vu dans cette écriture de la noirceur, un enracinement dans la thématique de l’attente. Et puis j’ai fini par me rendre compte qu’elle comportait aussi de la lumière. Contrairement à En attendant Godot, Fin de partie est une pièce qui met un terme à l’attente, une pièce dans laquelle souffrir ne sert à rien. Il n’y a pas de rachat possible, pas de salut possible, pas même de malédiction possible, car ce texte aboutit « au rien ». Mais au bout de ce rien, il y a sans doute quelque chose.

Quel pourrait être ce « quelque chose » ?
A. Fr. : Peut-être la lumière dont je viens de parler, une lumière qui apparaît dans la substance même de l’obscurité. Ce qu’il y a de magnifique dans cette pièce, c’est que la catastrophe qui s’annonce pourrait bien être le déluge. Et dans cette perspective, Hamm, Clov, Nagg et Nell ne sont pas des victimes mais des élus. Des élus qui mettent un terme à l’alliance passée avec le ciel en mettant un terme à toute attente. Je trouve cette idée très belle.
Par quel biais avez-vous choisi d’aborder cette pièce ?
A. Fr. : Par le biais du rapport au texte. Jean-Quentin Châtelain, Serge Merlin, Michel Robin et Isabelle Sadoyan sont de grands interprètes. Ils effectuent un travail prosodique très affirmé, rentrent dans le corps du texte, creusent la matérialité des mots. Fin de Partie est une partition. Je n’ai pas essayé d’avoir une vision générale de cette pièce. Elle ne possède d’ailleurs aucune continuité psychologique. Je crois que la meilleure façon de l’appréhender est de travailler de la manière la plus précise possible sur la suite d’instants qui la composent.
