Les dimensions de la Salle Favart se prêtent à merveille à la représentation des opéras de chambre de Benjamin Britten, un format que le compositeur britannique a adopté – pour des raisons tant pratiques qu’esthétiques – après le succès rencontré par son grand opéra Peter Grimes. En 1946, il livrait le premier de ces ouvrages d’un type nouveau, Le Viol de Lucrèce, une tragédie, puis, l’année suivante, un opéra comique adapté d’un court roman de Maupassant : Albert Herring. Œuvre plaisante, vaguement un conte d’initiation, occasion pour le compositeur et son librettiste Eric Crozier de moquer avec une certaine cruauté la société de leur temps, ce petit chef-d’œuvre est défendu par de remarquables interprètes du compositeur telles Nancy Gustafson ou Felicity Palmer. Dans le rôle-titre, on attend beaucoup du jeune Allan Clayton, qui a récemment chanté le rôle à Glyndebourne.
