Véronique Gens est une tragédienne née. De Rameau à Franck, de Mozart à Poulenc, elle porte les héroïnes de toutes les époques avec une voix aux inflexions parfaites, avec surtout une parfaite humanité. Très impliquée, au côté du Palazzetto Bru Zane, dans la défense de la mélodie et de l’opéra français du siècle romantique, elle n’en délaisse pas pour autant la tragédie lyrique ; en témoigne une belle anthologie intitulée « Passion » enregistrée en 2021 avec Les Surprises (CD Alpha). L’Alceste de Lully est l’un de ces rôles qui lui vont à merveille : deuil, sacrifice, retour des Enfers et triomphe de l’Amour, tout un répertoire d’émotions que la soprano sait peindre avec vérité et nuances. Même en version de concert, comme ici à Versailles et au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Véronique Gens irradie. Elle est entourée de Cyril Auvity (Admète) et Nathan Berg (Alcide), et Stéphane Fuget à la tête de l’ensemble Les Épopées.
