L’intrigue d’Alcina témoigne du goût de la période baroque pour le merveilleux : une magicienne vit de plaisirs sur son île enchantée où elle attire ses amants, avant de les transformer en rochers ou en animaux lorsqu’elle s’en lasse. Robert Carsen transpose l’action dans une immense demeure bourgeoise de campagne où des hommes-objets servent de mobilier à la maîtresse de maison. En évacuant toute magie, il évite le kitsch mais rend le livret moins extraordinaire. La production reste plaisante à voir, surtout si la distribution est vocalement à la hauteur car chaque rôle a été formidablement caractérisé par le compositeur. Myrtò Papatanasiu (Alcina), Anna Goryachova (Ruggiero), Sandrine Piau (Morgana) et Patricia Bardon (Bradamante) relèvent le défi.
