Défenseur résolu de l’interprétation sur piano moderne des œuvres anciennes, Alexandre Tharaud a donné à cette position la justification la plus convaincante qui soit par ses enregistrements et récitals, pour lesquels il sait choisir les pièces les mieux à même de « sonner » sur un Steinway. Ce n’est pas le moindre intérêt de cette démarche que de permettre la confrontation, dans un même programme et sur un même instrument, de pages d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. Au Théâtre de la Ville, le pianiste propose ainsi des pièces de François Couperin (1668-1733), objet d’un récent enregistrement chez Harmonia Mundi, en regard de la superbe suite Outre-mémoire, variances de Thierry Pécou (né en 1965) et de six autres œuvres en création, signées Gérard Pesson, Renaud Gagneux, François-Bernard Mâche, Jacques Lenot, Philippe Schoeller et Philippe Hersant.
