Vous êtes plutôt connue pour vos interprétations du répertoire moderne et contemporain. Interpréter L’Art de la fugue correspond-il à une volonté ancienne ?
Alice Ader : J’ai beaucoup joué Bach toute petite, mais ma venue à L’Art de la fugue est un peu une histoire de renaissance. Il y a quelques années maintenant, je me suis retrouvée à ne pouvoir travailler que L’Art de la fugue, à partir d’une petite partition de poche, que je possède toujours, et dont j’ai mémorisé les quatre voix. Voici deux ou trois ans, j’ai eu envie de revenir à cette musique, alors même que je prenais quelque distance avec la musique de chambre et avec le répertoire contemporain. J’ai d’abord travaillé l’œuvre sans idée de la jouer ou de l’enregistrer, sans doute en partie parce qu’il est difficile pour un pianiste de se situer par rapport à ce répertoire depuis la révolution des « baroqueux ».
Justement, comment vous êtes-vous située par rapport à ce courant ?
A. A. : Je ne me voyais pas jouer Bach à la baroque. De toute façon, ça ne marcherait pas au piano. Cependant, L’Art de la fugue ne pose pas de problème de style autant que d’autres œuvres, que la musique de danse en particulier, même si certaines fugues sont plus marquées, avec quelques ornements. Ce que je voulais surtout, c’était rendre à Bach la beauté de sa vision spirituelle. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, que Gilles Cantagrel cite dans le livret de l’enregistrement, disait que son père n’aimait pas la musique sèche. Pourtant, nombre d’interprétations de Bach aujourd’hui, y compris dans ses Passions, sont très droites, froides. Je ne vois pas pourquoi il faudrait jouer Bach sans émotion.

Comment avez-vous cherché à traduire cette émotion ?
A. A. : Elle doit d’abord naître du son. J’ai abordé L’Art de la fugue avec l’envie de mettre en avant la lisibilité des voix. Ces quatre voix sont pour moi quatre personnages indépendants qui créent par leur rencontre une verticalité. Surtout, j’ai cherché à me mettre dans le personnage de Bach, qui était un grand croyant. On joue souvent L’Art de la fugue d’une façon trop unanimement triomphante. Or c’est une œuvre de méditation. La tonalité, ré mineur, le dit, le chromatisme, très présent dans toute l’œuvre, le dit aussi. J’ai ainsi cherché à mettre en valeur les flottements, les retards. Mes fugues lentes sont très lentes, les rapides très jubilantes, comme un moment de gratitude. C’est à la fois une œuvre très humble avec un thème très simple et en même temps un hommage au Créateur qui s’exprime par une sonorité très lumineuse, très douce, ce sont presque des gouttes de lumière.
Vous avez enregistré l’œuvre en public. Pourquoi ?
A. A. : Interpréter l’intégralité de L’Art de la fugue en public, pendant une heure trois quarts sans entracte, est une expérience unique. Je le rejouerai d’ailleurs les 14 et 21 novembre au Temple Saint-Marcel à Paris. Sans doute l’enregistrement aurait-il été différent en studio, peut-être même plus parfait techniquement dans quelques fugues, mais j’aime cette continuité de l’enregistrement en concert, cela avance toujours, c’est mobile.
