La Hongrie est une terre de tradition musicale, où les compositeurs sont depuis longtemps allés puiser. Au temps des Habsbourg, la musique était autant pour le peuple hongrois une façon de revendiquer leur identité nationale que pour les Viennois d’accéder à un monde d’exotisme et de fantasme – avec ses Danses hongroises, Brahms en serait un bon exemple. La Cité de la musique questionne cette identité hongroise, à travers les traditions portées aujourd’hui encore par les Tsiganes. Le week-end des 21 et 22 novembre est ainsi consacré aux groupes traditionnels de différentes régions de Hongrie et de Roumanie, qui furent au début du xxe siècle le terrain de recherches ethnomusicologiques de Béla Bartók, pourfendeur des impropriétés faisant confondre musique tsigane et tradition musicale hongroise.
Entre inspiration populaire et influences occidentales
La première partie de ce cycle s’intéresse aux réinterprétations de ce riche héritage, du xixe au xxie siècle. La figure tutélaire de Bartók illumine ces cinq concerts, dont curieusement aucun n’est confié à des musiciens hongrois, permettant au passage de retrouver les différentes manières du compositeur. Sylvain Cambreling lance le cycle avec son Orchestre de la SWR de Baden-Baden et Fribourg, une formation qui a souvent défendu Bartók sous la direction d’Ernest Bour ou Michael Gielen. Aux Deux images de jeunesse, qui hésitent entre inspiration populaire et influence de Strauss et Debussy, le chef confronte les Messages et Nouveaux Messages de György Kurtág (né en 1926) et …auf… du Français Mark Andre (né en 1964), témoins d’un monde musical désormais grand ouvert sur le monde. C’est aussi ce qui ressort du programme de l’Ensemble intercontemporain dirigé par Susanna Mälkki (19 novembre), avec des compositeurs – György Ligeti (1923-2006), György Kurtág, Peter Eötvös (né en 1944) et Márton Illés (né en 1975) – qui tous ont vécu, appris, écrit ou enseigné hors de Hongrie. Le concert du 17 novembre, par l’Orchestre du Conservatoire et le pianiste Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, s’attache aux réinventions d’un folklore insaisissable à travers les exemples de Liszt (le poème symphonique Hungaria et le Concerto pour piano n° 1), Kodály (Danses de Galanta) et enfin Bartók (Suite de danses). On peut enfin opposer le concert des solistes de l’EIC du 21 novembre (musique pour piano, violons ou en trio dérivée des recherches sur le folklore) et celui dirigé par Pierre Boulez (le 16 à Pleyel), où s’affirme davantage la manière d’un orchestrateur brillant.
