Pour ce cinquième disque, le bassiste débarqué à Paris en 2004 marche dans les traces de l’érudit poète Ibn Battûta, conviant dans ce trip rétro-futuriste nombre de complices rencontrés au gré des années : le pianiste cubain Harold Lopez-Nussa comme le chanteur marocain Aziz Sahmaoui, l’Américain Lenny White et le chantre tunisien Mounir Troudi sont de ce projet où le Sénégalais s’affirme à la quarantaine dépassée avant tout comme compositeur. « Plus on avance et plus on grandit musicalement. Tous ceux que j’ai croisés, tout ce que j’ai écouté, ont nourri ma réflexion. » Et derrière la figure du sultan, c’est une forme d’autoportrait qu’Alune Wade dessine, celui d’un homme de mémoire saluant certains grands personnages africains tout autant qu’un créateur tourné vers l’avenir. Emblématique de cette dualité, le titre Uthiopic, contraction d’utopie et d’éthiopiques, évoque la figure du grand penseur Cheikh Anta Diop, dans la voix du rappeur sénégalais PPS The Writah.
