La liberté est capable de décliner les combinaisons les plus contradictoires, au moment même où le paquebot venu de la vieille Europe avec à son bord Karl Rossmann découvre le port de New York que Kafka n’a jamais connu. Au milieu des officiers de marine, des cris de mouettes et de cornes de brume, Karl fait une erreur symbolique : le bras vertical de la Statue de la Liberté de Bartholdi n’élève pas le flambeau qui éclaire le Nouveau Monde mais brandit un glaive. C’est une sorte de prophétie kafkaïenne accordée au pays des possibilités illimitées, et une première égratignure pour cette vision conventionnelle de rêve de bonheur des candidats à l’immigration. Qu’est-ce que la « pursuit of happiness » ? Un mythe solide mis à mal, une incantation aux libertés et émancipations civiques, à la réalité d’un confort matériel et d’une prospérité sociale.À travers les images de gratte-ciel et de « melting-pot », Karl fait son apprentissage, coupable involontaire de fautes innocentes aux conséquences dramatiques. Après s’être laissé violer par la bonne, le jeune homme est sommé par ses parents de s’exiler en Amérique.
Songes candides, embrumés et illuminés, habités de figures naïves
À son débarquement, l’expulsé est accueilli par un riche oncle qui pourrait l’introduire dans ses affaires. Mais, pour avoir accepté l’invitation anodine d’un des amis de la maison, l’apprenti se voit rejeté par son protecteur. Puis des compagnons de hasard, irlandais, français… abusent avec cynisme de ses petits biens matériels. Karl trouve alors un nouvel emploi comme groom d’ascenseur à Hôtel Continental : « Commencez au bas de l’échelle et essayez de vous élever petit à petit ». L’ivrogne irlandais a poursuivi le groom sur son lieu de travail, et Karl est congédié par le concierge en chef. Le malheureux perd sa valise et le portrait de ses parents. Il est ensuite embauché comme comédien ou machiniste par le dixième bureau de recrutement du « plus grand théâtre du monde » à Oklahoma. La sensuelle Brunelda le surprotège car « seuls les heureux semblent contents, il ne faut rien attendre de ce pays ». Ce parcours tragi-comique d’ascensions et de chutes décline une série de songes candides, embrumés et illuminés, habités de figures naïves et cauchemardesques. Karl (Cédric Joulie) porte le melon de Charlot. Une illustration fidèle et sans prétention du concept de liberté, manipulé entre cornes lucifériennes et ailes d’angelots. Roch-Antoine Albaladéjo, Philippe Blancher, Olivier Broda, Isabelle Kérisit et Anne-Laure Pons jouent le jeu.
