Romain Rolland, dans la préface à la première édition française d’Amok, en décrivait l’histoire comme « l’enfer de la passion au fond duquel se tord, brûlé mais éclairé par les flammes de l’abîme, l’être essentiel, la vie cachée ». Sur le pont d’un navire, un homme se confie, ivre de remords et taraudé par le fantôme d’un désir mort, saisi d’amok, cette folie des Indes née d’un excès de soleil et de chaleur suffocante. Il raconte comment il a rencontré une femme pleine de hauteur et de morgue, comment elle a prié le médecin qu’il était de l’aider à avorter, et comment elle a refusé le prix odieux qu’il lui proposait pour ce crime, préférant aller succomber sous l’aiguille d’une vieille rebouteuse indienne. Alexis Moncorgé interprète cet aveu entre autoanalyse et narration, qui ausculte les tréfonds de l’âme humaine et en livre la description implacable.
