Le plus grand des dieux du Capitole, Jupiter (David Maisse), tombé sous le charme de la belle Alcmène (Audrey Bonnet), prend les traits de son époux, le général Amphitryon (Arnaud Churin), pour profiter des faveurs de la jeune femme. Il est aidé, dans cette entreprise d’usurpation d’identité, par son fils Mercure (Ismaël Ruggiero), qui participe lui aussi à ce jeu de travestissement en empruntant l’apparence de Sosie (Olivier Balazuc), le valet d’Amphitryon. Cette double imposture se complique lorsque le général et son domestique reviennent prématurément de la guerre qui les éloignait de leur foyer… Directement inspirée de l’Amphitryon de Plaute, la pièce en vers de Molière fut créée en 1668, rencontrant un succès immédiat et dégageant un parfum de scandale. L’ombre de Louis XIV, monarque aux amours impérieuses, ne pouvait en effet qu’apparaître derrière le personnage de Jupiter. Pour mettre en scène Amphitryon, Bérangère Jannelle a projeté cette comédie aux inflexions tragiques, cette fable sur les jeux de l’amour, du pouvoir et de l’identité, dans un univers abstrait et contemporain. Un univers d’une grande obscurité au sein duquel les protagonistes de la pièce ont du mal à s’affirmer.
Quand les dieux se prennent aux jeux de l’amour
La jeune metteure en scène n’est en effet pas parvenue à diriger ses interprètes de manière à ce qu’ils incarnent leur personnage avec suffisamment d’intensité et d’intériorité. De manière à ce que leurs présences puissent s’imposer et ainsi dialoguer avec le dépouillement de la scénographie signée Stéphane Pauvret, lui apportant à la fois une forme de contradiction et de contrepoint. Au lieu de cela, les comédiens s’enferrent dans des tâtonnements ou des passages en force qui en viennent à brouiller jusqu’aux lignes de compréhension de la pièce. D’autant que l’actualisation à laquelle procède Bérangère Jannelle n’arrange rien à l’affaire. Nous transportant dans un univers contemporain aux codes imprécis, cette version d’Amphitryon ne rejoint ni l’efficacité d’une représentation historique, ni la puissance d’une projection contemporaine aboutie. Elle n’investit ainsi que de loin, et sans véritable à-propos, les questions intemporelles que soulève la pièce de Molière : celles des abus de pouvoir et des faux-semblants, des relations unissant la sphère du privé et celle du politique.
