Le mythe a donné à la langue française le terme de sosie, du nom du serviteur d’Amphytrion, qui, accourant prévenir la femme de ce dernier de son retour imminent, trouve la porte de la chambre barrée par Mercure, serviteur de Jupiter, qui pris l’apparence d’Amphytrion pour lutiner sa femme. Mercure prend alors l’apparence de Sosie pour que se prolonge le plaisir de son divin maître et s’ensuit une suite de dédoublements légère et amusante, bien que traversée de la plainte de simples mortels face aux abus de pouvoir des Dieux, comme l’écho indirect de reproches qui s’adressaient à Louis XIV. Après un convaincant Banquet de Platon, et avant de se lancer dans La vie est un songe, Jacques Vincey creuse la thématique de l’illusion, dans une veine davantage comique mais toujours portée vers la sagesse.
