Tout aimer, puisque seuls les esprits rabougris pensent que la privation est un choix ; tout tenter, puisque rien ni personne ne peut légitimement l’empêcher ; tout vivre et surtout faire table rase des conventions et des contraintes. Avec comme seul guide la liberté, dans les mœurs autant que dans la création, dans le langage autant que dans le ton, Anaïs Nin délace les corsets culturels de son temps avec une jubilation libertaire. L’histoire écrite par Wendy Beckett se déroule dans le Paris des années 1930, alors que « de nombreux artistes étrangers convergent vers la capitale française pour échapper au carcan de la morale trop restrictive de leur propre pays ».

Anaïs rencontre Henry Miller, dont elle tombe passionnément amoureuse, en même temps qu’elle succombe aux charmes de June, la femme d’Henry. « Alors qu’Anaïs travaille avec son thérapeute pour tenter de comprendre les rouages de ce trio amoureux qui mêle le sexe et l’amour à l’art, son père, jusque-là absent de sa vie, apparaît soudain, troublant davantage encore des frontières mal définies. » Au cœur du tourbillon des affects, surgit la question de la création et du travail, triomphateur des passions qu’il transcende quand il s’en nourrit pour faire une œuvre…
