Numéro 1 mondial, supérieurement doué, doté d’une crinière flamboyante et d’une fiancée (Brook Shields), enfant chérie de l’Amérique, André Agassi avait tout pour être heureux. Et pourtant, c’est ce prodige extravagant et adoré du public qui écrit dans son autobiographie, Open : « Je déteste le tennis, je le hais de tout mon cœur, et cependant je continue de jouer, je continue de frapper des balles, parce que je n’ai pas le choix. » L’histoire et les confessions intimes du kid de Las Vegas ont constitué, pour Marie Rémond, Clément Bresson et Sébastien Pouderoux, « une fenêtre pour parler du doute, de la pression, de l’enfermement ».
Le doute et la contradiction
Il est question dans ce spectacle, pétillant et drôle, d’André, bien sûr, des trois jeunes artistes qui s’inspirent de sa vie pour broder autour d’elle, mais aussi d’ « Anne Sylvestre, Vincent Van Gogh et Roland Garros ». « J’aime les gens qui doutent, les gens qui trop écoutent leur cœur se balancer… », chante Anne Sylvestre. Souvent, la personne s’accroche au personnage pour échapper à cet écart abyssal où le cœur se défait. « Nous travaillons également sur l’écart entre ce qu’on projette sur une personne et le monologue intérieur de celle-ci », dit Marie Rémond, qui voit dans la quête d’identité d’Agassi un miroir aux angoisses du comédien, et, plus généralement, le reflet de toute construction personnelle, inévitablement taraudée par le questionnement et la contradiction.
