Lorsqu’il compose son oratorio, entre 1797 et 1798, Haydn, qui a déjà composé ses cent quatre symphonies et pour ainsi dire inventé le genre du quatuor à cordes, est un héros de la musique. La foule se presse à la première de La Création, comme elle le fera à chacune des reprises de l’œuvre (plus d’une quarantaine au cours des dix années qu’il reste à vivre au compositeur, dont en 1800 une première exécution, en français, à Paris). Voilà une œuvre toute tournée vers la musique de l’avenir. Si elle conserve l’alternance récitatifs, arias et chœurs, elle prend la forme d’une véritable « symphonie biblique » pour évoquer la Genèse, l’orchestre personnifiant le chaos originel autant qu’il donne son élan au récit des archanges puis des hommes. Le baryton-basse Matthias Goerne est très attendu dans le rôle de Raphaël et d’Adam.
