Oreste, ambassadeur des Grecs, vient auprès de Pyrrhus réclamer Astyanax, ultime descendant troyen. Hector mort, Pyrrhus tient captive sa veuve, Andromaque, qu’il ose aimer alors que sa promise Hermione ressent l’amertume du rejet qui l’accable. Une aubaine pour Oreste (Xavier Boiffier) amoureux d’Hermione : « L’amour me fait chercher ici une inhumaine », dit-il à Pylade (Romain Cottard). Si Pyrrhus refusait de mettre à mort le fils d’Andromaque, il se placerait du côté ennemi et abandonnerait Hermione aux bras d’Oreste. Cette intrigue passionnelle entre figures antiques – une chaîne galante d’amours non partagés qui enserrent la tragédie d’Andromaque de Racine – sur fond conflictuel du lourd passé de la Guerre de Troie, verserait facilement dans les raffinements surannés des sentiments confus du langage amoureux. Mais l’homme de théâtre Declan Donnellan a su stimuler l’énergie et l’ironie tragique qui mènent ses victimes sur les chemins de la fatalité. La tyrannie des cœurs fait en sorte que nul ne reconnaît l’autre. Oreste aime Hermione qui aime Pyrrhus qui aime Andromaque qui aime Hector… mort.
Les amoureux éconduits sont terrassés, fidèles à leur cœur.
Des lignes parallèles destinées à ne jamais se rencontrer, des jaloux habités par la fureur et ses excès et qui n’imaginent pas que leur désir ne puisse être exaucé. Une fatalité de gestes qui tisse sans le savoir la toile du malheur, de la douleur et de la mort. Le jeune Astyanax est l’enjeu involontaire de ces adultes en déséquilibre, un objet manipulé que se déchirent de grands enfants en faillite d’autonomie et de responsabilité. Sourire aux lèvres, Sylvain Levitte, cherche à serrer fraternellement la main des grands qui l’entourent, à leur complaire pour son salut. Un enfant, abandonné à sa solitude et écartelé entre père et mère. La pudeur n’est plus au rendez-vous des corps à corps, les amoureux éconduits sont terrassés, fidèles à leur coeur. La violente Hermione en colère (Camille Japy) gifle Oreste et se jette sans réserve dans les bras de Pyrrhus (Christophe Grégoire) tandis que ce dernier préfère la posture du violeur d’Andromaque (Camille Cayol) qu’il voudrait bien soumettre. La pièce a la fulgurance esthétique et la pompe chic des mélos américains des années 40. Uniformes de la marine royale pour les hommes gominés, robes noires pour les femmes élégantes à l’ombre de noces chrétiennes carillonnantes. Des martyrs de l’amour tous magnifiques sans oublier les confidents Vincent de Bouard, Dominique Charpentier, Anne Rotger sur le plateau noir et moiré de Nick Ormerod avec ses sièges design.
