Qu’est-ce qui vous a mené sur les pas de Siddhârta ?
Angelin Preljocaj : Sa quête de spiritualité passe par le corps, qu’il soumet aux mortifications, à la flagellation, au jeûne mais également aux plaisirs de la chair. Siddhârta n’a pas de tabou dans sa démarche pour atteindre la sérénité. Il expérimente différents chemins possibles et finit par prôner la « voie du milieu ». Comme chorégraphe, cette recherche qui s’opère à travers des contraintes corporelles est évidemment intrigante et passionnante. J’avais commencé à explorer ces questions, dans des œuvres telles que MC 14/22 « ceci est mon corps ». Toutes les religions ont un rapport complexe mais intense avec le corps, souvent tout en le niant d’ailleurs. Les rituels de la prière passent ainsi par des postures, des mécanismes gestuels et un déroulé précis, ordonné, qui semblent être les viatiques nécessaires à la connexion avec le divin. Comme pour mettre l’esprit dans un état « prédisposé » par le corps.
Comment, en tant que chorégraphe, travaillez-vous cette articulation du corps et du spirituel ?
A. P. : J’essaie d’inventer et d’articuler un langage imaginaire, une forme de ritualisation qui se situe dans l’ordre du simulacre puisque dans un spectacle, mais qui génère, ou renvoie, un écho intérieur. Car si la représentation est un simulacre de la réalité, le corps des danseurs vit la réalité du simulacre. La danse est une pensée en mouvement. Elle est pour moi un moyen très puissant pour questionner le corps, relier existences charnelle et spirituelle, figurer l’invisible, l’indicible. Mon travail est de donner de l’esprit au corps. Le danseur s’offre à notre regard comme un signe, vecteur d’une écriture, porteur d’un sens.
Après le conte Blanche-Neige des frères Grimm, le monologue Le Funambule de Genet, vous vous intéressez au récit initiatique de Siddhârta. Votre danse semble chercher la narration…
A. P. : Cette ligne apparaît aujourd’hui en effet, presque à mon insu. La modernité a affranchi le mouvement en dénouant les attaches du ballet classique, notamment par rapport à la narration. « Comprendre, détruire, reconstruire » dit un principe des alchimistes. Après un siècle de déconstruction, la question de la narration ouvre peut-être des pistes fécondes d’invention. Elle me passionne en tout cas en ce moment. Je m’y confronte toujours avec les outils de la chorégraphie, dans une démarche qui passe d’abord par une approche conceptuelle, qui fabrique de l’abstraction à partir du récit puis la recontextualise ensuite. Ce désir – ou besoin – d’histoires est sans doute lié à notre humanité. En se racontant des histoires, on redéfinit un « en-commun » de notre époque.
Comment avez-vous travaillé avec l’équipe artistique ?
A. P. : L’écrivain Eric Reinhardt a d’abord conçu sa propre version, à partir de nos discussions sur le projet et des écrits originels sur la vie de Siddhârta. Puis, à partir de ce pré-texte, le compositeur Bruno Mantovani a écrit la musique, en suivant la dramaturgie découpée en tableaux, et Claude Lévêque a proposé une scénographie. Enfin, j’ai élaboré la chorégraphie avec les danseurs de l’Opéra de Paris, à partir de matériaux que j’amenais. Nous avons eu chacun une vision personnelle, la richesse du projet est de les réunir en scène.
