Angelo le tyran aime la Tisbé, comédienne charmeuse qui soupire secrètement pour Rodolfo, gentilhomme proscrit qu’elle fait passer pour son frère et qui adore clandestinement Catarina, la pieuse épouse d’Angelo, qui, à défaut de l’aimer, veut du moins la posséder… Ainsi tangue la folle ronde des amours et intrigues dans la vénéneuse Padoue du 16ème siècle, qui enflamme et saigne les cœurs au creux des discrètes alcôves du pouvoir et sournois guets-apens du désir. Podestat imposé par Venise et placé sous la coupe tranchante du puissant Conseil des Dix, Angelo vit le cauchemar d’une surveillance permanente et d’une jalousie paranoïaque. « Je ne suis despote qu’à condition d’être tyran. » avoue-t-il dans un soupir à Tisbé. Tyran donc, politique et domestique, amoureux solitaire qui voudrait bien user de ses ordonnances pour forcer les sentiments mais ne peut que contraindre à la mort. D’un coup de dague ou, plus raffiné, d’une larme de poison.
Amour, poison et trahison
Créé en 1835 au Théâtre-Français, le mélodrame rocambolesque de Victor Hugo n’épargne aucun archétype du théâtre romantique, avec ses vilains sbires, espions vicieux, complots, duels, pleurs et serments définitifs. Le poète brode une prose bourrelée sur une trame quasi vaudevillesque, ourlant son propos d’une noble ambition exposée en préface de l‘ouvrage : « Montrer ces deux femmes, qui résument tout en elles, généreuses souvent, malheureuses toujours. Défendre l’une contre le despotisme, l’autre contre le mépris. Enseigner à quelles épreuves résiste la vertu de l’une, à quelles larmes se lave la souillure de l’autre. Rendre la faute à qui est la faute, c’est-à-dire l’homme, qui est fort, et au fait social, qui est absurde. » Le plaidoyer fait long feu et se brûle au romantisme incandescent, certes habilement tendu au fil des péripéties, mais bien schématique. Christophe Honoré s’empare du texte comme d’un conte nocturne, hanté par les figures oisives d’une jeunesse désabusée qui s’enivre de plaisirs pauvres et de fétides manigances. Sans doute pour désarmer le verbe luxuriant, il introduit un simulacre de tournage cinématographique, dans une mise en abyme qui ne fonctionne guère. Appuyé par l’ingénieux dispositif scénique, vaste échafaudage ménageant chausse-trappes, caches secrètes et pièces coulissantes, le parallèle entre terreur privée et politique, relations de force intimes et tyrannie d’Etat, est porté par la subtilité et la force du jeu des acteurs. Martial Di Fonzo, roitelet colérique et inquiet, Clotilde Hesme, insolente courtisane et amante déchirée, et Emmanuelle Devos, vertueuse amoureuse, enlèvent divinement cet imbroglio sentimental, presque jusqu’à faire oublier sa platitude.
