« Fantaisie gay sur des thèmes nationaux » : c’est ainsi que Tony Kushner avait raillé d’un sous-titre insolent Angels in America, diptyque achevé en 1993 qui traversait d’un souffle l’Amérique des années Reagan, marquées par l’irruption du sida, l’arrivée au pouvoir de Gorbatchev et la chute du mur de Berlin. Au cœur de la tourmente, deux couples, qui vont se déliter au fil de la décennie 80. L’un unit deux hommes : Prior, ancien travesti issu d’une grande famille protestante, lentement dévoré par la maladie, et Louis, son amant juif, qui se dérobe et s’enfuit dans les bras d’un autre. Le second apparie deux Mormons : Joe, ambitieux, brillant avocat, qui n’assume pas son attirance pour les garçons, et sa femme Harper, qui shoote son désespoir au Valium. Et puis, s’immisçant entre eux, il y a Roy Cohn, sombre avocat d’affaires, intrigant qui obtint en coulisse la mort d’Ethel Rosenberg, homosexuel honteux qui vengea ses penchants en combattant les lois favorables à la communauté gay américaine. Il y encore un rabbin, un médecin wasp, le « plus vieux bolchévique du monde encore vivant ». Et des anges…
Une société désorientée
De cette peinture, parfois bien mélo, accrochée au pinacle du répertoire américain, Krzysztof Warlikowski a su tirer une fresque monumentale sur la névrose et le désarroi moral d’une société capitaliste minée par le cynisme affairiste, le carriérisme effréné et l’hypocrisie puritaine. Toujours très plastique et rigoureuse, soutenue par une direction d’acteurs sans faille, la mise en scène extrait les questionnements cousus en filigrane et évite l’anecdotique. Au creux des destins qui se débattent en scène, se devinent l’effroi d’un monde aspiré en plein matérialisme et le vide béant laissé par l’explosion des modèles structurants, idéologiques, familiaux ou religieux. Dans la très belle scénographie signée Malgorzata Szczesniak, les douze comédiens tiennent impeccablement sur le fil de l’émotion. Ils cheminent au milieu du chaos de leur vie, tiraillés entre le bien et le mal, la culpabilité et la repentance… traçant à l’épreuve de cet enfer terrestre la voie du pardon et de l’acceptation de soi.
