Longtemps Michael Clark porta l’étiquette d’enfant terrible de la scène britannique, solidement épinglée dans les années 80 par ses excentricités légendaires de jeune prodige. Sexe, stars, drogue, danse et rock punk : le danseur fascine alors autant par son art que par ses frasques. Revenu à la scène au seuil des années 2000 comme chorégraphe, il signe une danse pseudo-classique, aussi nette dans son dessin qu’athlétique dans son exécution. Corps toniques, presque roides, torsions extrêmes, gestes foisonnants et paradoxalement bien ordonnés : son style pousse les figures imposées aux limites, sculpte la lumière en aplats colorés, tout en heurtant volontiers ce formalisme à l’élan frondeur du mouvement. Pour Animal – Vegetable – Mineral, pièce pour six danseurs créée au Barbican de Londres, Michael Clark retrouve ses complices musicaux et compose une partition chorégraphique en trois actes : des mouvements lâchés par saccades mécaniques sur la pop séduisante de Scritti Politti, l’agitation plus nerveuse sur les rythmes rock des Sex Pistols, puis l’énergie tendue à bloc sur Relaxed Muscle, déclinent ainsi trois matières d’être.
