Hésitant entre deux tessitures, la voix d’Anna Caterina Antonacci n’a pas été facile à dompter. C’est d’abord par ses talents de comédienne qu’elle s’est imposée au public français, tragédienne sculpturale dans Rodelinda au Châtelet ou vamp classieuse dans Agrippina du même Haendel au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. Sa Cassandre dans les Troyens de Berlioz au Châtelet en 2003 a révélé les couleurs bouleversantes de sa voix de prima donna. Le délire du public lorsqu’elle s’écroulait devant la vision du Cheval de Troie saluait le retour d’une vocalité propre au chant français. Sans jamais imiter le verbe clair de Crespin ou le timbre sombre de Callas, la soprano italienne renouait avec l’art et le talent de ses illustres devancières. Paris n’imagine plus une seule saison sans sa voix chaude et envoûtante. Ce n’est que justice que l’Opéra National de Paris lui offre une nouvelle Carmen dont elle possède tous les atouts : la beauté physique, la sauvagerie contenue, une diction irréprochable et un confort dans la tessiture de mezzo-soprano qui témoigne de sa totale liberté.
