En septembre 1973, lorsque mourut Anna Magnani, une immense tristesse s’abattit sur Rome. La ville perdait non seulement une actrice de grande envergure mais également le visage que le peuple s’était choisi. Armand Meffre, pour rendre hommage à l’icône italienne au jeu inimitable, couronnée à Cannes et à Hollywood, égérie de Rossellini, Fellini et Pasolini et amie de Tennessee Williams, a choisi de raconter sa vie tumultueuse en l’imaginant assister à ses obsèques, ressuscitée le temps d’une messe d’adieu. « Entière, vulnérable, complexe, emplie de poésie intérieure. Une vitalité inébranlable, un roc, une vie orageuse faite de violentes passions, d’attachements viscéraux. Comédienne mythique, qui n’avait pas son pareil pour s’approprier un personnage. », dit Marie-Joséphine Susini, qui l’interprète en une célébration intense et exaltée.
