Comment avez-vous choisi cette pièce ?
Anne Bisang : Je ne connaissais pas très bien Wilde et j’avais une image un peu caricaturale de son œuvre. De plus, je suis plus intéressée par le répertoire contemporain. Mais j’avais déjà monté des auteurs de la fin du XIXème siècle et Salomé est une pièce très particulière, très à part dans l’œuvre de Wilde. Au fond, ce qui m’a guidée jusqu’à Salomé, c’est mon attachement pour les figures d’adolescence. Depuis La Griffe de Barker jusqu’à Roméo et Juliette, ces figures m’attirent.
Qu’est-ce qui vous attire dans l’adolescence ?
A. B. : C’est son aspect autodestructeur qui me fascine. Tout est possible à cet âge y compris sa propre destruction. C’est à cet aspect que Wilde s’intéresse plutôt qu’à celui de la femme fatale. La femme fatale est une figure d’objet. Or Wilde offre une vraie autonomie à Salomé : elle a des désirs et c’est cette pulsion du désir qui la conduit à des choses terribles et à la mort. Cette pièce est l’histoire d’un combat fou autour du pouvoir et du désir croisés entre ces trois figures, Salomé, Iokanaan et Hérode.
Something Wilde : tel est le titre de votre spectacle. Pourquoi ?
A. B. : J’ai aussi essayé de lire la pièce en fonction de la biographie de Wilde. On retrouve dans Salomé le sentiment de toute-puissance qui est le sien au moment où il l’écrit, au sommet de sa gloire, juste avant sa chute. Poussant un peu trop loin son orgueil et son panache, il se met, au moment de son procès, dans une situation qu’il pouvait éviter et qui le conduit à la déchéance. On retrouve chez Salomé cette image de l’artiste démiurge qui surplombe la société par sa subversion et se brûle les ailes.
Dans quelle ambiance installez-vous la pièce ?
A. B. : Je me suis séparée du décorum symboliste en m’inspirant davantage du film muet de Charles Bryant réalisé en 1923 à Hollywood avec la Russe Alla Nazimova dans le rôle de Salomé. J’ai été cherché du côté du cabaret, avec une sauvagerie proche du cirque et un humour proche du burlesque, dans un décalage qui ne retranche pas la violence des enjeux entre les personnages. C’est une fable qui met en garde sur l’illusion du pouvoir, qui interroge le grotesque et le côté funeste du pouvoir. Erotisme et politique s’y tissent violemment : le désir est une pulsion qui rend la conquête du pouvoir encore plus violente. Personne ne l’emporte à la fin : même si Hérode ne meurt pas, son pouvoir est fracassé et tout se termine par une hécatombe.

Quels comédiens avez-vous choisis ?
A. B. : C’est Georges Bigot qui joue Hérode. C’est un acteur qui va jusqu’au bout des choses, qui se confronte à la grandeur de ses personnages. Lolita Chammah a aussi ce goût de la démesure, cette absence de crainte qui s’ajoute à la force de sa jeunesse. Julien Mages est un jeune acteur suisse avec qui je n’ai jamais travaillé mais qui a lui aussi quelque chose de très fort qui lui permet d’incarner Iokanaan, cet intégriste qui est pris dans la haine des femmes, de la sensualité et de lui-même. Et Vanessa Larré, actrice à la fois très élégante et très fraîche, joue Hérodias. J’ai évincé les figures secondaires en concentrant la distribution sur ces personnages et en condensant la fable dans ce qu’elle a de plus fulgurant.
Comment cette pièce s’inscrit-elle dans l’ensemble de votre travail ?
A. B. : Dans une forme de rupture si on considère que j’ai travaillé jusque-là sur une vision plus politique du théâtre. Avec cette langue et cet aspect poétique très fort, je m’éloigne du rationnel et du maîtrisé. Je me laisse porter davantage par ce que l’œuvre réveille en moi de sensations pures avec une moindre envie d’explicite et davantage d’onirisme. Je me laisse volontiers dépasser par ce que l’œuvre charrie. Je veux donner l’envie de redécouvrir cette œuvre. On considère souvent qu’il y a un aspect empoussiéré et inoffensif chez Wilde alors qu’il y a du danger et quelque chose d’intemporel dans cette œuvre. En résumé, cette pièce est une petite bombe !
