Qu’est-ce qui vous a décidé à adapter cet unique texte de Robert Antelme ?
Anne Coutureau : Depuis plus de vingt-cinq ans, ce livre est sur mon chevet. Je l’ai offert, j’en ai fait des lectures, et aujourd’hui avec mes outils d’artiste j’ai décidé de le transmettre en créant un spectacle. Ses mots me pénètrent au-delà du temps, ils ont bouleversé et enrichi ma conscience, m’ont fait du bien malgré la douleur et l’horreur qu’ils décrivent. Je ne pense pas que l’expérience relatée par l’auteur soit intransmissible à l’autre, j’ai au contraire voulu prendre ma part en tant qu’être humain à la transmission de ses mots, sur un plateau de théâtre, avec les moyens qui sont les miens. La langue très concrète y semble faite pour l’oralité, et l’auteur choisit aussi de prendre de la distance en formulant une pensée philosophique de l’expérience qu’il traverse. Arrêté comme résistant en 1944, déporté après quelques semaines à Buchenwald dans un camp de travail dont les kapos étaient des criminels de droit commun allemands particulièrement violents, il est libéré le 29 avril 1945 ; il n’a pas connu « l’horreur gigantesque » des camps d’extermination.

Qu’est-ce qui vous touche particulièrement dans sa manière de relater l’expérience concentrationnaire ?
A.C. : Il veut voir et montrer, sans recourir à aucun effet, à aucun commentaire. Son texte est pour moi la manifestation même de la force et de la lucidité de la littérature. Au cœur d’une entreprise d’anéantissement de l’homme, Robert Antelme démontre qu’il est impossible de réduire un homme à autre chose que lui-même. L’homme sur le point de mourir assimilé par les nazis à un « déchet » et les SS en uniformes au pouvoir absolu, semblables aux « dieux », sont égaux. En gardant à chaque instant les yeux grand ouverts sur cette idée, l’auteur apporte l’irréfutable preuve de l’unité indivisible de l’espèce humaine. La folie exterminatrice des nazis et la haine érigée en doctrine politique ne peuvent qu’échouer et aboutir à montrer la commune appartenance des bourreaux et des victimes à une seule espèce. Tous les systèmes fondés sur l’exploitation ou l’asservissement partent du postulat mensonger qu’il existe une variété d’espèces humaines. Mais plus un système s’acharne à nier l’humanité de l’homme, plus il la met en évidence. Précisément l’inhumain est humain : seul l’être humain peut se définir ainsi par sa propre inhumanité. Cela me touche profondément car sa pensée et sa conscience aigües concernent autant le corps social que l’intime. Ce texte m’habite dans la vie de tous les jours.
Comment abordez-vous son interprétation sur la scène ?
A.C. : Le spectacle, c’est autant le texte que mon rapport au texte, qui me bouleverse. Je dis le texte sur le plateau nu, passeuse d’une parole lucide, qui ne submerge pas ses lecteurs par l’émotion ou la plainte. Tout résonne en moi. Je suis comme une visiteuse qui arriverait sur des lieux mémoriaux aux frontières de l’humain et dirait ces mots, dans un espace vide, uniquement travaillé par le son et la lumière. Cette conscience si éclairante d’appartenance à l’espèce humaine ne peut que nourrir notre pensée contemporaine, inviter si possible à créer une nouvelle philosophie de vie.
