« Et, parfois, il me prend des mouvements soudains / De fuir, dans un désert, l’approche des humains. » dit Alceste, pestant contre ses contemporains. On peut rêver de solitude et de retrait quand il suffit de sortir de chez soi pour retrouver ses semblables, mais c’est un cauchemar d’y être contraint. Tel fut le confinement, pendant lequel, dit Anne Delbée, « le théâtre a perdu son rire, la palpitation de ses larmes, l’emballement de son cœur, le battement de ses pieds, le claquement des mains, le scintillement des cerveaux. » Elle a donc écrit Alceste ou L’Acteur fou « pour redonner vie aux acteurs durant cette période de mise à mort du théâtre ». Valentin Fruitier et Emmanuel Barrouyer interprètent le dialogue entre des comédiens demeurés au plateau après la représentation où ils ont joué Alceste et Philinte. « Ivresse, rage, désespoir, joie, désir, pour une nuit de folie où tout est possible, même la venue de Molière ».
