Comment vous inscrivez-vous dans l’histoire du festival ?
Anne-Françoise Cabanis : Je partage la même passion que Jacques Félix, fondateur et président jusqu’à sa mort en 2006, pour l’art de la marionnette, pour son renouvellement, pour la rencontre entre les cultures et les techniques. Le festival doit rester festif mais évoluer vers une meilleure structuration et une professionnalisation de l’organisation. Il draine en dix jours presque autant de spectateurs que le Festival d’Avignon, accueille quelques 120 compagnies du monde entier et propose 500 représentations, 7 grandes expositions, sans compter le off qui attire plus de 100 troupes. L’équipe permanente ne compte que quatre personnes ! Le renouvellement et le rajeunissement des bénévoles, aujourd’hui 400, sont essentiels. L’avenir du festival passe aussi par le développement des moyens pour la production et les résidences, qui sont actuellement très limités.
Comment imaginez-vous le festival que vous souhaitez profiler pour les années à venir ?
A.-F. C. : La programmation cherche un équilibre subtil entre la création, les formes contemporaines et les traditions de tous les continents. Il faut ancrer cet art dans son histoire plurielle. La dimension internationale est l’un des traits forts du festival. Elle exige des temps de repérage à l’étranger pour garder une ligne artistique exigeante et mettre en place des échanges. Cette édition compte moins de nationalités représentées mais elle propose en revanche quatre ou cinq spectacles par pays, afin de dessiner un panorama de la marionnette dans chaque contrée. Ainsi, pour la Corée, le Chili ou le Québec, on pourra découvrir les mouvements esthétiques et les recherches des jeunes compagnies.
Existe-t-il un art international de la marionnette ou persiste-t-il de fortes différences esthétiques nationales ?
A.-F. C. : Mis à part dans les formes classiques, tels que le bunraku, les marionnettes indonésiennes ou thaïlandaises, qui possèdent une identité propre, l’éclatement du castelet se retrouve partout : la marionnette – et les manipulateurs – ont désormais conquis l’espace et mixent les techniques. D’autre part, le théâtre d’objets, très français, s’est aujourd’hui immiscé dans les autres pays. Les formes, les esthétiques, les idées circulent de plus en plus par-delà les frontières.
Comment se caractérise ce renouveau de la marionnette ?
A.-F. C. : A rebours de l’image enfantine, voire niaiseuse, qui continue souvent de prévaloir, la marionnette offre un formidable territoire d’aventures artistiques, de maillage entre les disciplines, d’invention sur les contenus. Elle est en prise avec les problématiques du monde actuel, car elle permet, du fait même du médium qu’elle constitue, une plus grande distanciation et donc une grande liberté de ton face à des sujets difficiles que l’incarnation rendrait illustratifs, voire insupportables. Cette édition en témoigne : la marionnette s’impose dans la danse, les arts plastiques, le cirque contemporain, le théâtre, la musique…
Quelles sont les relations avec l’Institut international de la marionnette, implanté à Charleville-Mézières ?
A.-F. C. : Nos missions sont complémentaires, l’Institut intervenant sur la formation, la transmission et la recherche, le Festival sur la production et la diffusion. Outre l’intégration de présentation de travaux d’élèves et la rencontre entre écoles, la programmation compte beaucoup d’artistes issus de l’Institut, qui, en vingt ans, a contribué à former de nouvelles générations de marionnettistes et irrigué les réseaux de création. Quatre spectacles des 6ème et 7ème promotions ont été accueillis dans le lieu de résidence du festival.
Vous ouvrez cette année un espace professionnel, le Repaire.
A.-F. C. : Le festival rassemble des marionnettistes du monde entier et beaucoup de programmateurs. C’est l’occasion de favoriser les rencontres et les débats d’idées. De nombreuses conférences, table rondes et scènes ouvertes sont organisées autour de la thématique « qui manipule qui ? », déclinée sur les plans esthétique, politique, social, culturel… Autant de façons d’envisager le lien entre poétique et politique.
