Comment caractérisez-vous cette seizième édition du festival ?
Anne-Françoise Cabanis : Nous accueillons 151 spectacles, 131 compagnies représentant 28 pays, programmées dans 37 salles de programmation, et entre 120000 et 150000 spectateurs en incluant la rue. Des professionnels de tous les continents sont présents et la ville entière est à l’heure du festival. Nous bénéficions de tout un encadrement de bénévoles, la population s’investit beaucoup, près de 300 familles prêtent des chambres pour accueillir les artistes. Certaines pièces se déroulent dans la rue, tels le grand spectacle d’ouverture, ainsi que des déambulations venues du Portugal ou d’Amérique du Sud. Par ailleurs, nous fournissons aussi une aide logistique à quelque 45 compagnies visibles dans la rue. Le festival, créé par Jacques Félix en 1961, est devenu triennal à partir de 1972, et biennal depuis 2009. Cette périodicité permet de bâtir une belle programmation, riche de multiples créations. Jacques Félix a aussi créé l’Institut national de la marionnette en 1981 et l’école supérieure des arts de la marionnette en 1987, qui ont avec le festival contribué au renouveau de la marionnette. Les compagnies qui passent ici tournent en général à l’étranger après. Par rapport à notre activité et à la trentaine d’intermittents embauchée pour le festival, notre budget de 1,7 millions d’euros est vraiment limité…
Comment expliquez-vous le renouveau des arts de la marionnette ?
A.-F. C. : Il s’explique d’abord par une recrédibilisation de la marionnette, qui au début du XXe siècle était vécue comme un “sous-art“ pour les enfants, la partie subversive du guignol étant alors étouffée et édulcorée. Le renouveau de la marionnette a permis de retrouver la force extraordinaire de ces pantins qui, débarrassés de l’enveloppe corporelle et de psychologie, peuvent dire, exprimer et faire beaucoup de choses. Ce qui est intéressant à Charleville, c’est le lien qui se tisse entre les diverses traditions et la créativité qui en découle. Les marionnettistes vont ici énormément voir les spectacles des autres artistes, – ce qui n’est pas si fréquent dans les autres festivals -, ils regardent et s’imprègnent, ce qui génère des échanges et même une mixité dans les productions ultérieures. On a par exemple constaté cette mixité à propos du renouveau des ombres, nourri et stimulé grâce aux compagnies venues à Charleville, dont certaines emblématiques de grandes traditions asiatiques.
Comment concevez-vous la programmation ?
A.-F. C. : Le festival très éclectique s’équilibre entre des formes traditionnelles très intéressantes comme des poupées siciliennes dans un opéra baroque, ou des formes du Cambodge, et des formes très contemporaines avec des marionnettes sur cintre, portées, à gaine, de toutes tailles et dans des matériaux incroyablement divers. Dans la continuité de « La marionnette au centre des arts » en 2009, l’actuelle thématique « Mémoires et réalités nouvelles » permet de rendre compte de l’extrême richesse et diversité des arts de la marionnette.
Comment concrètement sélectionnez-vous les spectacles ?
A.-F. C. : Comme pour les festivals des pays de l’Est, nous recevons d’abord des dossiers de candidature. Cette année environ mille compagnies du monde entier ont postulé par l’intermédiaire d’internet pour présenter leur travail. J’étais au début un peu réticente sur ce mode de fonctionnement mais en fin de compte, cela permet de découvrir des gens qu’on ne connaîtrait pas autrement, surtout pour les pays lointains. Nous passons des heures et des heures à visionner toutes ces images, puis nous demandons des compléments d’information, effectuons des voyages de repérage, des rencontres. Nous avons constaté que la marionnette est extrêmement vivante dans tous les pays. Environ la moitié des spectacles vient de l’étranger. Cette dimension internationale très importante permet de créer une ouverture, des rencontres et des échanges, et de valoriser les apports culturels des uns et des autres.
