Quelle place l’opéra occupe-t-il dans votre parcours de metteur en scène ?
Anne-Marie Lazarini : L’opéra est d’abord associé à des souvenirs d’enfance. Mon père, qui était employé municipal à Marseille, avait régulièrement des invitations pour l’Opéra. Nous allions donc voir un grand nombre de spectacles, notamment des opérettes, et j’adorais cela ! Mais j’ai attendu 2005 pour mettre en scène pour la première fois un ouvrage lyrique, après des années consacrées uniquement au théâtre. Pour une première, je n’ai eu peur de rien et je me suis lancée dans La Traviata ! Je me suis très bien entendue avec la chef d’orchestre, Andrée-Claude Brayer, et nous avons très vite eu envie de refaire un spectacle ensemble. C’est ainsi qu’en 2007, nous avons monté Le Mariage secret de Cimarosa, cette fois-ci chez nous, aux Athévains. L’idée était de le jouer dans la durée, comme au théâtre, pendant deux à trois mois – une nouveauté à l’opéra ! Le succès fut au rendez-vous : nous avons rempli chaque soir, avec un public qui auparavant ne venait pas forcément au théâtre. Lo Speziale, que nous programmons cette saison, est donc ma troisième mise en scène d’opéra, toujours avec Andrée-Claude Brayer.
Qu’est-ce qui vous a attiré dans cet opéra de Haydn ?
A.-M. L. : J’ai tout de suite été séduite par le livret de Goldoni. Je ressens des affinités très méditerranéennes avec cet auteur, dont j’avais monté, il y a quelques années, la pièce Les Amoureux. Lo Speziale (l’apothicaire) est presque une pochade, mais avec de réelles qualités dramaturgiques. J’avais ainsi envie de travailler sur l’idée du désir, au cœur de cet opéra qui met en scène trois hommes courant après une jeune poulette !
Quelle scénographie avez-vous imaginée pour ce spectacle ?
A.-M. L. : Pour les décors, j’ai travaillé, comme toujours, avec François Cabanat. Je ne voulais pas que l’opéra se situe entièrement à l’intérieur de la boutique de l’apothicaire. Nous avons donc imaginé une place de Venise, avec le comptoir extérieur de la boutique. Au centre de la place, un canal est enjambé par un pont, sur lequel sont installés les musiciens et la chef. François Cabanat a par ailleurs voulu recréer le phénomène de l’acqua alta, les traditionnelles inondations de Venise dues à la marée haute. Il a utilisé pour cela un procédé de toile en plastique, comme dans la scène inaugurale de Casanova de Fellini.
Comment avez-vous sélectionné les chanteurs de cette production ?
A.-M. L. : Il était essentiel de choisir des chanteurs pour leurs qualités musicales mais aussi théâtrales. Je remarque d’ailleurs que les jeunes chanteurs, même s’ils n’ont pas l’habitude du théâtre, ont de plus en plus envie de développer cet aspect-là. La soprano Karine Godefroy est une habituée : elle a déjà chanté dans La Traviata et Le Mariage secret. Le rôle de Volpino, d’habitude confié à une femme, sera ici chanté par un baryton (Laurent Herbaut), pour une question de crédibilité dramatique. Les deux rôles de ténors seront tenus par Jean-François Chiama et Xavier Mauconduit.
