En une époque marquée par un relatif désintérêt pour les relations danse-musique, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continue de mener sa carrière de chorégraphe au fil de ses passions musicales. Tout au long de son parcours, le travail des compositeurs lui a ouvert de nouvelles voies : de la musique sérielle à Bach, de Mahler aux Beatles, elle n’a cessé de se confronter à la rigueur des contrepoints et des répétitions, à la jubilation des canons et des fugues. Ce travail d’orfèvre a fait d’elle une virtuose de la composition chorégraphique : des pièces comme Fase (1982) ou Drumming (1998) sont aujourd’hui des modèles du genre. La polyrythmie entraîne le spectateur dans un état rare, proche de la fascination et de la perte des repères ; la précision de l’écriture, vertigineuse, devient le moteur de la tension dramatique. Car la prégnance de l’univers musical suscite également la création d’ambiances fortes et contrastées, de la machine infernale de Rosas danst Rosas (1983) aux évocations fluides de Zeitung (2008)…
Une chorégraphie du désarroi
Dans sa prochaine création, les neuf danseurs (dont la chorégraphe elle-même) partageront la scène avec quatre musiciens. Ils se confronteront à une forme que la compagnie n’avait pas encore explorée : celle de l’Ars Subtilior. Par cette expression, forgée dans les années 1960, on désigne un courant de l’histoire musicale du XIVe siècle, marqué par une sorte de maniérisme avant l’heure : un extrême raffinement et une grande complexité de la composition rythmique et polyphonique, dont l’interprétation, particulièrement délicate, rendait nécessaire le recours à des chanteurs professionnels. Cette technicité et ce plaisir de l’enchevêtrement représentent autant de défis pour la chorégraphe. Mais l’Ars Subtilior se caractérise aussi par un usage important des contrastes, voire des dissonances. On peut mettre cette caractéristique en relation avec l’époque qui voit ce courant musical se développer : un moment de crise, à la fois matérielle (la peste a fait des ravages), institutionnelle et spirituelle (l’Eglise traverse une phase d’intenses bouleversements). Une perte de repères qui renvoie étrangement à la période que nous traversons : le jeu du contraste et de la rupture devient alors la matière d’une chorégraphie de l’incertitude et du bouleversement, qui fait écho à notre condition d’êtres humains des années 2000.
